Do I need a Gender Recognition Certificate to change my name?

No. A deed poll name change is completely separate from a GRC. You can change your name at any time, regardless of whether you have or intend to apply for a GRC.

Will my gender marker change when I change my name?

No. Name and gender marker are handled separately by every UK organisation. A deed poll changes your name. If you also want to update a gender marker, that is a separate request you can make to each organisation.

Can I use Mx as my title after changing my name?

Your deed poll covers your name, not your title. However, when you notify organisations of your name change, you can simultaneously request a title change to Mx. Most major UK organisations now accept this, including the Passport Office, DVLA, and most banks.

Do I need to explain my gender identity to my witnesses?

No. Your witnesses are simply confirming that they saw you sign the deed poll. You are under no obligation to explain the reason for the name change; it is entirely private.

Can I use a single name with no surname?

Technically yes, but some organisations struggle to process records with only one name. You may encounter administrative friction. Keeping a surname (even if it's not the one you were born with) makes things considerably smoother with official institutions.

Is a deed poll confidential?

Yes, if you don't enrol it. An unenrolled deed poll (what this service generates) is a private document. You only share it with the organisations you choose to notify. It is not publicly registered unless you specifically choose to enrol it with the Royal Courts of Justice.
