Can a non-UK citizen use a deed poll to change their name in the UK?

Yes. A deed poll is available to any adult resident in the UK, regardless of nationality. It changes your name in UK records but does not affect your name on foreign passports or documents from your country of origin.

Will my foreign passport still be valid after a UK deed poll?

Yes. A UK deed poll does not affect your foreign passport. You may end up with UK records in your new name and a passport in your original name; check with each organisation how they handle this.

Does changing my name affect my UK visa or right to remain?

A name change does not affect your visa status. However, you should notify UKVI and update your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) to reflect your new name. Contact UKVI for the specific process.

Can I get a British passport in my new name after a deed poll?

Only if you are a British citizen. If you are a British national as well as a citizen of another country, a deed poll allows you to apply for a British passport in your new name. If you are not a British citizen, you cannot hold a British passport.

Will a UK deed poll be recognised in my home country?

Generally no. Most countries do not recognise UK deed polls for changing their own records. Contact your home country's embassy or consulate for advice on name changes in their system.
