Do I need to send the original deed poll to HMPO?

No. HMPO accepts a certified copy: a photocopy on which you have written 'I certify this is a true copy of the original deed poll', signed and dated. Keep your original signed deed poll safe at home.

How long does a passport name change take?

Standard online applications currently take up to ten weeks. A fast-track premium service can reduce this to around one week. During processing, your current passport is held by HMPO, so plan around any international travel before you apply.

Can I still travel while my passport name change is being processed?

No. Once you submit your current passport as part of the application, it is held by HMPO and cannot be used for travel. If you have upcoming travel, either delay your application or use the fast-track premium service.

Can I change my gender marker on my passport at the same time?

Yes, you can request both in the same application. A name change requires a deed poll; a gender marker change requires a letter from a doctor or gender specialist. You can include both requests in the same application to HMPO.

Do I need a deed poll if I am changing my name after marriage?

Not necessarily. If you are simply taking your spouse's existing surname after marriage, HMPO accepts your marriage certificate. A deed poll is needed if you want a hyphenated name, a new surname, or to change your first name.
